The Barnes Family Compound is steeped in history, spanning over several generations. It all
started in 1953, when the first parcel of land was purchased and cleared for crops. The initial
farming was done with the help of a mule and plow, and by 1954, the first homestead was
established.
As the years passed, the Barnes family continued to expand their farm. In 1963, they
constructed their second homestead and purchased their first tractor, which allowed for row
cropping. By 1968, the farm had grown to 100 fenced acres, accommodating cows and hogs. The
natural springs on the property provided water for the farm and the family, who built three
large ponds and stocked them with catfish, bass, and bream.
By 1977, five generations of the Barnes family lived and worked on the farm. The fertile soil produced corn, wheat, soybeans, watermelons, peas, beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, and cane for syrup making. Deer, turkey, quail, rabbits, and squirrels thrived on the fields' gleanings, which often resulted in game for the table.
